Frequently Asked Questions

I’m good at a lot of things, but I’ve never been a great writer. Is an Oakline Memoir right for me?

Absolutely. We are able to work with anyone who can sit down and tell us about their life. Some people are much better storytellers in a social setting than they are on the printed page. We cater to both. Whether you’re a storyteller or a writer, we can help publish your memoirs and leave a lasting legacy for your future generations.

What types of people commission an Oakline Memoir?

An Oakline author has led a very successful life, personally and professionally, and wishes to share their stories in a classic memoir. They understand that passing on their legacy to loved ones will be the most cherished and lucrative investment they ever make. Depending on the memoir commissioned, Oakline authors are generally aged 50 and up, although the Oakline Group Memoir is often an attractive gift for a group of high school or college friends who wish to preserve their memories. The Oakline Business Memoir appeals to small business owners or corporate executives interested in documenting their professional success.

How long from start to finish until my memoirs are published?

Approximately one year. Read The Memoir Process for more information and a good timeline for your published memoir.

What is the payment schedule for my memoir?

To reserve your spot on the editorial calendar, Oakline Books requires a $10,000 deposit, which will then be applied to the total payment. One half of the remainder is then due upon completion of your personal interview, and one half is due upon acceptance of the final proof. This way, you maintain control of the process throughout and only pay for results.

Where does the personal interview take place and what can I expect?

Your editor will travel to a location of your choosing for the personal interview. Some of our clients are more comfortable hosting their editor in their own home, while others prefer their place of business, a conference center or a library. The most important thing is the author’s comfort. Your editor will professionally interview you and audio record your interview sessions. This is to preserve the integrity of your responses and help your editor craft your finished memoir. The interview sessions last approximately three hours each and can be scheduled over a course of several days, at your convenience.

Will my memoir be available in bookstores and on Amazon?

No. Oakline Books caters to a clientele that wishes to share their personal memoirs with their friends and family. Our clients are very successful individuals who value their privacy, and we treat their memoirs accordingly. However, if you would like an ISBN number and access to sales in bookstores, we can help you arrange it.

How much work do I have to do?

As little or as much as you like. Our job is to make the memoir process painless for you, and we walk you through every step, from the initial planning, to writing and editing, to photo selection, to the finished product: an elegant hardcover memoir that will enrich your family and loved ones for generations to come. The most challenging parts of the process will be deciding how to organize your life on paper and reading the drafts prior to publication. Working together, we intend to make those aspects fun and memorable for you.
